Paxil and pregnancy

Posted by Karey on June 12, 2000, at 11:15:42

I was prescribed paxil while i was pregnant...I had developed into a depressive state at that time due to many situations...i was on it for approx 6 months..and decided to stop taking it....I got severe withdrawal symptoms..i know they say there aren't severe withdrawals but that was not the case with me...i went back on it and weaned myself off of it with success...now i beleive my son has ADD and i am wondering if there is a link to my taking this while pregnant..at the time i was told that this was the only drug that was considered safe for pregnancy...now i am reading that there have not been any studies done on this...so what am i to beleive..i am very concerned that his may have caused my sons behavioural problem. What can you tell me about pregnancy and paxil?

Karey - Longitudinal studies on this are done in retrospect and I have only seen a few and they were concerning pregnant women who had taken Prozac. The "Prozac babies" are now in their 20s and, so far, there has been little indication of any trend to more psychiatric problems in this population. I will reserve my opinion on this until this population has past their 25th birthday.

Paxil is considered to be one of the safer antidepressants in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but I believe that all of the questions regarding this subject have not been resolved and probably won't be for a number of years.

I believe that Zoloft and Prozac are generally considered "safer" antidepressants in pregnancy. It is a risk versus benefit thing. The problems caused to the fetus by a mom's depression (eg high cortisol levels) is thought to be worse than any problems seen (so far) with some of the antidepressants. I would not say that your son's ADD was caused by the antidepressants, but I could not say this with 100% assurity.

Hope this helps - Cam

Hello my name is Dorothy,
Paxil during pregnancy has been shown to have complications after birth such as jitters and jondice. The web site I got this information from is www.baylorhealth.edu/HealthNews/Reuthers/NewsStory1111200219.html
This info was posted in 2002. Happy surfing and I hope you find what you need.
