dexedrine h elp

Posted by elise on June 9, 2000, at 19:14:52

I switched (actually my doc) my daughter from ritalin to dexedrine a few weeks ago. She switched her because molly said she was getting stomachaches an d headaches. Anyways, the last few weeks many of her good friends have told me that she is just not herself...very mean and irritable. I won't talk to the doc till monday, but I am putting her back on ritalin. Is this something that can happen with dexedrine? thanks, elise

Elise,

Back in the days (way back...) when I used recreational drugs, dexedrine was one of my drugs of choice. They made me mean, irritable, edgy, just to name a few, but for some unimaginable reason I still used them. Some people tolerate "dexies" better than others. But your daughter's experience sure has brought back a lot of memories for me. Is she normally hyper-active? Sounds like you need to find an alternative, unless you both are willing to stick it out until when, and if her body adjusts to the drug. This might be a side effect that will pass with time, but I would watch her very closely. I'm sure others can give you a more informed view tham I can, but this was my experience with it.

Hope this helps.

My best to you and Molly,
Greg

Elise,

I have no experience with dexedrine but I can relate to you that other parents I have been in contact with have reported different reactions (including pschosis) that their kids have had to almost every stimulant that's out there. As they say on this board,"your mileage may vary". Check out www.addclinic.com. There is a very good dicription of the stimulants commonly used in ADD treatment.

elise, I don't know anything about dexedrine, but I do have experience with Ritalin and it was not good for me. You might ask your daughter's doctor about Adderall, my psychiatrist prefers it to either Ritalin or Dexedrine, and I have found it pretty effective with no side-effects. Best wishes to you and your daughter. CarolAnn

Molly has been on adderall already. I am going to go back to the ritalin and make sure she eats so she doesn't get a stomach ache. It seems to be the only med that has helped her so far. We'll see. thanks all for your help. elise
