When I first became depressed over a year ago, I slept less. I was on effexor and trazadone for six months and within this time period my sleep was fine. In January, I began manerix. A few weeks later, all I pretty much did was sleep, sleep and then sleep some more. The obvious thought would be that the manerix was sedating me so I discontinued it. I then began prozac and wellbutrin and I bearly slept. Next, I switched to Celexa and experienced mild insomnia. I did not like the fact that I could have sex for as long as I wanted and not climax - the girl I was with at the time did not do any complaining. Since I did not give manerix a full trial the first time I decided to try it once again. This time around, the manerix did not influence my sleep as I was sleeping normally again. It was actually somewhat activating which was surprising. This did not make any sense. The first time I took manerix I was sleeping all day and this time around the effects were activating. I did not think much of the sleep thing until now. I discontinued the manerix because I did not recieve much benefit from it.Since effexor worked for me in the past I went back on it using the same dosage of 225 mg along with trazadone. After three weeks of beginning the effexor once again I began sleeping up to twenty-four hours straight and when I was awake it was only for about four hours at a time. This "sedation coma" continued for two weeks. All of a sudden it went away for another two weeks but then just a few days ago it returned. Last night I slept for eighteen hours straight. I got up, had something to eat, felt wired and now I am ready to go back to bed - I have only been awake for three hours. I know that the effexor is not making me sleepy because I took it for six months previously and was ok. The first time I took the effexor I was wired and now it is putting me on my ass all day. I spent most of January and May in dreamland. What the hell is going on! It is extremely difficult to get things done when your passed out most of the time. If any of you know why my sleep cycles in this manner I would love to know.

I just posted a message about a half an hour ago and I was ready to go back to bed. Now I am completely wired and I feel like jumping off the walls. What the hell is going on?

One thing to consider (probably not the first thing) is that you could have bipolar II or bipolar III.
I'm hoping many more people will come along with other suggestions, but this is something I would consider.
I'd keep track of your moods and sleep patterns to see if there is any particular rhythm to them.
Just one idea, Janice

When I read your post I had the same exact thought as Janice--rapid cycling bipolar II. There are meds specifically made for that and maybe you should discuss them with your doc. You can either visit mentalhealth.com or rxlist.com for a listing. Take care--Tina

Andre, I have that happen a lot too. I take Effexor-XR in the morning, and am initially sleepy (getting out of bed is the hardest thing I do all day, anyway!) and then I feel pretty much average all day, then get tired by bedtime, then I suddenly feel energized (I'm a night person). Ask your pdoc about this. To help me sleep, I'm taking Serzone 40 mg/day at night. Your normal "biological clock" may be involved in your suddenly feeling energized at night; just a thought.--Cindy W

Bipolar III is very similar to both Bipolar I and II, but the person never experiences any hypomania. Most likely they are usually always depressed-- just to varying degrees.
Anymore questions, please ask,
Janice

Andre - Serotonin and melatonin are closely linked and structurally similar. These two chemicals are a link between the stress and endocrine systems of the body.Melatonin plays a physiologic role in the regulation of sleep and is secreted into plasma in a circadian rhythym (different levels in the day and night - higher at night). Association of insomnia with low or distorted melatonin rhythyms has been demonstrated in a number of studies. You may be experiencing distorted melatonin levels because of increased serotonin levels, but this is only a guess.
I doubt that taking melatonin will help. I would think that your body will figure out this imbalance on it's own, over time. You may just have to ride it out for a while.
Hope this helps - Cam

From what I have read, bipolar III is hypomania that is precipited by medication used to treat the depression.

Actually Andre, many bipolar folks go manic with anti-depressants. My guess would be that bipolar III people would be the least likely to go manic. I don't think bipolar III is an official diagnosis. I have read a couple of threads on it here at psychobabble and have seen it mentioned in some articles.
I hope you're figuring some things out for yourself, Janice
