Anyone tried beta blockers with stimulants?

Posted by DaveL on June 7, 2000, at 0:20:46

I've got a friend who's doctor put her on ritalin and a beta blocker. Like me she is dyslexic/ADHD. She says she loves the combo. I'm thinking about giving it a try because the ritalin often gives me jitters and anxiety. The beta blockers might also help my migranes. Has anyone had any experience with a beta blocker plus a stimulant? Sounds like a strange combo but the theory is that it allows you to experience the stimulant effect of the ritalin without your blood vessels being so constricted that you cut off the blood supply and miss the stimulant effect. According to my friend, Dyslexic's tend to have vascular plasticity problems and her doctor who specializes in dyslexia has had a lot of success using this combo. I guess it's not that much different than Wellbutrin and Klonopin. SRSI's with Trazadone, ect. One gives you enough energy to get through the day and the other calms you enough so that you can be human and get to sleep at night?? Anyone tried this combo???

Thanks in advance,

DaveL

Dave,

Yes, I am taking Propranolol (Inderal) with Adderall(an ADD stimulant), because taken alone, the Adderall triggers my migraines. With the beta blocker, I get the benefits of the stimulant with no headaches. I can't really see where it calms me down or changes my mood, though.

James here....

James nods.

beta blockers quiet the ADD behaviors like tapping, ect. that we just LOVE to do. They also calm the "startle" reflex that is underregulated in ADD.

stims often get people too keyed up, phyically, and beta blockers calm this. The combo of stims +
betablockers makes sence, I used BB's when I want to be physically clam, great for interviews, public speaking and when I am on stage.

Contraindications: depression and ashtma. Some may get depressed but this is reversable. Beta blockers tend to make ashtma worse and there have been reports of BB's causing ashtma but mant have taken BB's, they are safe. I would avoid the long acting ones, you want the BB to act about as long as the stim does; no reason to be on 24/7.

YMMV
