Password saved at public computer-Dr. Bob

Posted by Noa on May 11, 2000, at 10:20:31

Dr. Bob, as you know, I use the library computers a lot. I noticed that when I have revisited the same computer, my password has been saved since the last visit. While this is very convenient, I am also concerned about the, I know, HIGHLY UNLIKELY, event that someone else could post under my name. I am not that worried about it, because of how unlikely it is, but I was wondering if I could erase the registration name and password from this computer.

Jumping in, as usual ....

Noa, if the computer doesn't have any soft of security software, you could go into the browser's preferences and set it to not accept cookies while you're on-line. That would probably also mean going into the cookies.txt file for the browser, finding the line for Babble with your name and pword in it, and deleting it.

Or, you could register under a different name with a different password before you sign off each session. I'm guessing that the cookie script Dr. Bob uses will just write over "Noa"'s information with the info supplied by the more recent registrant.

just a few thoughts...

For now, this is probably the way to go.

With Netscape on a Macintosh, anyway, if it's set not to accept cookies (under the Edit menu, select Preferences, then go to the Advanced section) when you quit the browser, old cookies are deleted (so you don't have to worry about editing the file).

That would work, too.

Noa, thanks for pointing out this issue. I'll add a box that'll give people more control, but I don't think I'll be able to get to it right away.

My to-do list:

1. The site now saves (as cookies) email addresses (when given) as well as names and passwords.

2. New users now have the option of giving their year of birth, gender, and location when they register.

3. I need to add the box above.

4. I need to add a way to add or update registration information after you're already registered.

Bob

Hey, Dr. B --

If you ever want to give up that psychiatry stuff and go to work scripting sites, I got some contacts for you here in NYC ... ;^).

cheers,
bob

... and another thing ....

How about a way for registered users to post anonymously?

Like I said, nothing stops us (right now, in general) from creating a second pseudo and signing on as that "person". But I think there is some meaning behind seeing "Anonymous" as the author of a post and knowing that it's not an individual's handle, but rather it's one of us.

just thought I'd suggest that, since you seem to have so much time on your hands Dr. B.

;^)

bob, you want Dr. B to go from writing scrips to writing scripts?

Well, there's a pretty big demand for both, isn't there? If there wasn't this whole brouhaha about on-line pharmacies, he *could* be writing scripts for scrips...

cheers,
bob
