Hmm, I was wondering about location, too. Not to get too personal, I was thinking just country and, if in the US, Canada, or Australia, state or province.
It would be more work, but if there's interest, I could also try to make a space where people could, if they wanted, say more about themselves, which would then be accessible to others...

An interesting idea as long as it isn't mandatory. I don't mind adding to a thread on age or location, but I don't think I would deposit this infomation into a permanent and easily accessible site. It already makes me a little uneasy to know that a person can (and has) searched all of my posts to read up on my background. I suppose that's the price one pays to post. But I don't think I would want to make it easier for anyone.
Also, I am curious as to the turnover on this board. How long would this information remain accurate or even relevant? How long will you keep a registration that is not in use or are you even tracking usage?
That said, thank you for everything you do, Dr. Bob. This site has helped me a lot.

Dr bob,
Personally I don't see any problem in requiring whatever information you might find interesting or helpful. That's because, after all, each person here is completely anonymous unless they choose to not be.
I would think at your next presentation concerning the subject of the internet in psychiatry, having statistics on what countries and states people are communicating from would be an eye opener. Off the top of my head, I know we've had people from Brazil and Switzerland, among others. States ranging from coast to coast. And various provinces of Canada. I think that's pretty cool.
I would have no problem with you requiring more basic demographic knowledge; perhaps the psychiatric illness the patient deals with; whether they see a gp or a specialist, on and on; and then also have a section where the person can contribute whatever other information they want to voluntarily. As long as we don't give out our full real name, SSnumber, complete address, etc, we are completely and safely anonymous.
