EffexorXR and Vision Problems

Posted by maggie on April 29, 2000, at 1:31:16

Ever since I've been on 150mg Effexor XR daily, I seem to have had a real decrease in the sharpness of my vision. Things in the distance are much more blurry (and I've got new glasses), and the small printing up close is just as hard to read. Also affected is 'accomodation', taking often as much as 5 minutes to adjust to distance. Somewhere I read this could be a problem due to Effexor. Has anyone heard of this, know where I could find written information, or know if this is a permanent problem. Thanks for any help you can give.

EffexorXR and Vision Problems -- MAGGIE

I had vision problems with Effexor, but it was because it dialated my pupils as though I was getting an eye exam. Check out your pupils responsiveness to the changes in light and see if they look larger than normal.

I goofed and forgot to refill my scrip and so I missed today's dose (300mg) of effexor xr. This afternoon, since it was a beautiful day, I was sitting out in the park reading the paper. After a while, I took off my glasses and then when I was just staring into space, I noticed "floaters". I have had floaters from time to time, but these were distinct. In addition to the usual tiny black flecks, there were these long, thin, transparent squiggly looking tube things floating there too. With floaters it is always hard to actually focus on them, but I was able to see them fairly well. It felt like being in some kind of 3-D slide prep that someone might look at under a microscope, because it looks like the floaters are floating in some sort of viscous fluid. Does anyone know what this is, and is it related to not taking my meds today? Do I need to see my opthalmologist?

Hi Noa,

I've had floaters all my life -- little transparent squiggly things and transparent spots that move randomly across my field of vision distorting the objects in front of me.

I can remember entertaining myself when I was a little girl, moving my eyes quickly to one corner and then fix on something so I could watch the floaters go by and distort what I was looking at. (When you're an only child, you make up a lot of games to amuse yourself.)

My vision is good. I don't wear glasses or contacts. Glaucoma is hereditary in my family. My ophthalmologist's questionnaire when I go for my check-up every other year always asks if I have floaters and I always say yes. But no one there has ever told me that it's a problem. Frankly I don't know what they are, but figure if I've had them this long there's no harm in 'em.

Noa, I've always had floaters too, and like allisonm, I used to play with them as a kid (would lie by a swimming pool, watching the floaters). I haven't noticed any weird visual things from Effexor-XR (am on 375 mg/day), although with Serzone, I had an "ocular migraine" (no head pain, just weird scintillating lines that wiped out parts of my vision in one eye for a minute). Also, when I waved my hands at night, on Serzone, I could see "traces" (kind of like you see when you wave a sparkler, in the dark). It was kind of fun, really (but my pdoc didn't seem to think it was great; I hope he didn't think I was a doper or anything, since I'm not).

I've had these for as long as I can remember, like a piece of lint floating on your eyeball. I didn't notice them get worse when I was taking Effexor, but they do seem to get worse when I'm tired.

I just looked up floaters, here is one site with info:

http://www.eyenet.org/public/faqs/floaters_faq.html

I am going to make an appointment with my opthalmologist because these tube-like, squiggly, floaters are new.

check out this board--there are a lot of people out there who suffer from floaters. I posted a question about meds and floaters. I'll let you know if any info comes up.

The only time I get weird things, like floaters and blank spots in front of my eyes is when I have had panic attacks.
These have really scared me, thinking I was losing my sight.
But they don't occur any other time.
