My pdoc took me off Effexor last week because of a raise in blood pressure. I haven't had any since Wednesday and it's Saturday. I was only on it for maybe a month or so, on 75 mg/day. I guess my pdoc thought that it was a pretty low dos and I wouldn't have any problems going off, but that hasn't been the case.
Thursday was no problem, but Friday and today I have been dizzy, unable to get my self together, in a super bad mood, angry at everyone, yelled at my kids, my spouse and just felt a total bitch. I have been experiencing an emotionality I haven't experienced since I went on Prozac 3 (?) years ago. The only thing that's lifted the fogg at all has been a couple of shots of strong coffee (I live in Miami so Cuban coffee, expresso, is cheap and on every street corner).
I really didn't expect to feel like this and I don't like it at all. I feel like I've been shut down. I've got young kids, one of whom has a mild autism, and my husband works all the time, so I really need my wits about me and yet I feel like its all I can do to stay awake. Then when I sleep I have nightmares. I woke up last night yelling.
Anyway, my question is, how long do these withdrawal effects last usually? I seen alot of different posts on here, some people seem to take months, others less, but I didn't find anything in the manufacturer's info about withdrawal symptoms or having withdrawal problems at all.

In reply to Effexor withdrawal, how long?, posted by Sara T on April 22, 2000, at 18:40:36
In my experience Effexor has the most difficult withdrawals, while Paxil is a close second. The withdrawal symptoms usually subside in anywhere from 1 week to 3. For people who have been on higher doses for longer time, withdrawals could be longer. I've even heard of nightmare stories where it took two or three months for longtime users of high doses. Yikes! Thankfully you were only on a low dose for a short time. That is definitely in your favor.
Do you have any Prozac leftover? Can you call your doc and see if he has any Prozac samples onhand? If not, can he call in to your pharamacy a prescription of say, 3 or 4 capsules of Prozac? If you could take Prozac for just a few days and then let it taper off on its own, it will make the withdrawals much more mellow. Wishing you a good day. JohnL
