Ephedrine may be a drug in which a positive response to it predicts success with one or more of the NE ADs. Does anyone have ideas as to a similar drug for predicting a response to serotonergic Ads (i.e. 5-HTP???). Also, is there possibly a drug in which a certain response to it would indicate bipolarity or cyclothymia. Any ideas at all about any drugs that may have predictive value for depression, whether legal or illicit.

Even easier--what about diagnosing with food?
From what I've read, my sense is that
people who respond to serotonergic
drugs (Prozac, 5HTP, etc., etc.) will often
be sensitive to foods that can affect
serotonin levels. For example, people often
crave carbohydrates because eating these
foods results in a release of serotonin that
can (temporarily) improve mood and anxiety.
Similarly, certain people may notice a mood
effect by eating foods like turkey or salmon
that contain large amounts of serotonin-
precursor proteins. These relationships
between food and serotonin may be one
reason why serotonergic drugs are often
effective in treating eating disorders...--jd
