I could be on the wrong board for this one, but I am curious if anyone else experiences this and whether it has anything to do with mental illness.
Right before I fall asleep, I get goosebumps all over my body and feel freezing cold.
When I feel it I'll even think, 'oh great, I'm about to fall asleep'. Usually it's so strong, I wonder if it will wake me up instead.
Janice
Any ideas?
What type of doctors deal with sleep disorders?

Wow! I have the exact same thing. At first it made me kind of nervous - like I was cold and wouldn't be able to sleep, but then I realized it happens right before I fall asleep. Now I don't worry about it - just think to myself - Okay now I'm going to fall asleep. I don't know why it happens. I take Zoloft, 100 mg.a.m. and Benadryl 25 mg. p.m. for sleep. My body temperature is frequently all over the board. Usually my husband says I'm way too hot to sleep next to. BTW - I'm 44 - so I don't think it menopause. Let me know if you find out what makes this happen.
Thanks, Brenda

Hi Brenda,
you too!
It's pretty weird. If I find out why, I will let you know. I'm curious if it has anything to do with my manic depression, as my sleep is certainly involved.
Thank you for your response, Janice

I usually feel cold before I fall asleep. Sometimes as I am trying to fall asleep I feel so cold that I sometimes start shivering and have to put on socks and extra night clothes just to warm up, which wakes me up and makes me crabby. I have never thought it might be due to my depression or the medications I'm taking. This has been going on for years -- years and years before I ever started taking ADs.
When I was married, my husband and I often remarked about this. I was always cold and he was always warm when we got in bed. By morning, I was always warm and he was always cold.

Hi Allison, I have no idea whether or not it has anything to do with depression or medications. I'm at a point in my illness (ADs don't work) where I am exploring non-medication types of treatments.
I know my sleep is involved in my manic depression, and was curious about this aspect of my sleep, as it is very odd to experience this night after night.
I am also wondering if body temperature has anything to do with depression, etc.? (I once had a low grade fever off and on for months when I was badly depressed.) I know very little about the process of sleep...and nothing about how body temperatures are involved.

Hi, Janice,
If you find out anything, I would be interested to know.
Thinking back, I think lately I have noticed that I am colder when I do get cold than I used to be. But maybe this also is a function of being the only body in the bed, or of underestimating the need for flannel pajamas and socks. I have never understood this pm/am temperature change, though.
Good luck!
