I'm interested in locating an article or information comparing the different anti-psychotic medications. I've been told that Sulpiride has much less of the dulling effects then the others (Mellaril, etc). Thank you for taking a moment to answer my plea.

SusanJane - If you search PubMed in www.mentalhealth.com and type in - antipsychotics and "comparative studies" [All] - it will give you many abstracts of studies of the comparisons of antipsychotics. Write down the references and look them up at your closest medical school library (or if you are rich, order them on-line). After you finish researching all of these studies you should be ready to obtain your PhD. - Cam W.

> SusanJane :)Olanzapine (Zyprexa) is probably the safest of them all, and easy on side effects. Its sedation is good for sleep, but doesn't carry over much into the next day after a couple days of adjustment. It has a good antidepressant antianxiety effect, either as monotherapy or in combination with an antidepressant. Common side effect is weight gain. Risperdal is a bit less sedating and less weight gain, though a tad less safe. Stelazine is more alerting. It is the closest thing to Amisulpride available outside of Europe.
But of them all, I think Amisulpride gets top honors. It is effective at low doses for negative symptoms, dysthymia, and depression. At high doses it is for psychosis. At medium doses it's kind of a mix. So it's highly adjustable. And it's very specific for dopamine receptors. Most other antipsychotics have action at multiple receptors other than just dopamine. It's a real crime this one isn't available in USA. Thank goodness for European pharmacies willing to accept a USA prescription and mail it.
This is the end of the thread.
