The two times I've been in the hospital for depression, it was a good experience. (One was the local hospital in a little town, and the other was a psych hospital in a city.) I felt calmer right away when I got on the ward knowing that the staff was watching to make sure I didn't hurt myself. The nurses and other staff were kind, and it was a big relief to be around a lot of people who understood that I felt really bad- and who felt really bad in the same way, some of them. I didn't have to try to "act normal." Both times, too, the staff got my medication adjusted so that when I left 3 or 4 days later, I was shaky but didn't feel nearly as horrible as I had when I went in.

Checking in was the hardest part-- lots of questions, things to sign, lots of explaining how you feel to this person and that. When I got done and up to the ward, it was a big relief.

I don't know your own situation-- but I know that going to the hospital helped me and was not scary.

Good luck. Harry just came home from the hospital, maybe he can share his experience.

Rose, just day ago you posted that your combination was working well for you--has there there been any precipitating event that has you feeling bad again? your posts sound very much like you need, and want, help. do you have a therapist? i think you should call him or her, or your p-doc, and let someone who is a professional and familiar with your situation help you to decide what the next step should be for you.
i sincerely hope that you find some peace, please keep us updated.

Rose,

I have been in a couple of different hospitals and they have been good experiences. I was assigned a good therapist and the staff was very helpful. They were there to take care of you and keep you safe. We had day programs to help with the problems we had in the "real world." If you feel in anyway that you are not safe where you are or really need the extra time to heal yourself then I would say that a hospital would be a good option.
