Bladder problems and antidepressants

Posted by Auntie M on March 3, 2000, at 2:35:16

I have had to stop taking any antidepressant, even the newer SSRIs, because I am susceptible to "neurogenic bladder." That is, urinary retention, stress incontinence, and constant pressure and pelvic pain. It took a long time to find a urologist who made the connection to the meds because this condition is usually caused by spinal injury or MS. I am told that if left untreated, it can result in kidney failure. However, I cannot get an answer as to whether the condition is permanent or reverses once the medication is stopped. Right now I'm doing OK off the meds, but worry that I may need to go back on something if I should bottom out in the future. If the condition reverses every time the medication is stopped, I might be able to go on meds for a few months at a time. Has anybody else had to deal with this side-effect?
(P. S. I have life-long treatment-resistant depression and have been on every AD at some time except MAOIs.)

I have had bladder problems with effexor, too. The urge to pee comes on fast and furious, with no warning. And then it is hard to control. But, to make matters worse, when I go to pee, sometimes I have to focus really hard to allow anything to come out.

Here's the kicker--now that I take lithium, I have to pee all the time. But I still have the wierd stuff from the effexor.

I am a medical transcriptionist and I am horrified to see how many patients who take AD's also have bladder problems. (Including myself!) Why aren't more Doctors aware of this vicious side effect? DANG!
