Alternative med(s) for long term MAOI user?

Posted by Edward on February 25, 2000, at 3:56:21

I have used Phenelzine for about 14 years, with good results early on. Must now discontinue its use due to
severe maoi-induced insomnia and daytime hypersomnolence. Would like to hear from someone with similar experience who has successfully made transition from a MAOI to a non-maoi medication.

What about Parnate?

Effexor (venlafaxine) might be a good choice.

I did try the switch from Nardil (Phenelzine) to Parnate several years back and could not make the transition. Efflexor is an interesting idea - I am not familiar with the drug so will do some research and discuss it with my Psych Doc. Effexor seems to be frequently referenced on this chat line - will add another post and see if other users have had success. Thanks again for your reply.

I've never tried MAOI's but have found Effexor-XR to be helpful with depression and also somewhat helpful for OCD symptoms (am on 300 mg/day, with no side effects I'm aware of except for occasional dizziness which goes away). --Cindy W
