Hi, I am about to have my first visit with a psychiatrist in March. Do they usually prescribe a med or meds on the first visit? If not, how many visits does it take? Also does insurance cover these visits? Thanks Gloria

Gloria,
I cant speak on your insurance, but my pdoc prescribed meds on my first visit, which was to the hospital. I think it probably depends on your condition and how long you have been feeling that way.
Good Luck!

It might also depend on whether a person's problems require getting more information first (lab tests, for example). But I think many pdocs do prescribe on first visit.

My psychdoc prescribed meds on the first visit. Make sure you find out how you have been diagnosed. That helps you with your own research into the condition and meds. As to insurance - that depends on your situation, i.e., benefits through work, HMO, disability, etc. Just ask the psychdoc's office before you go in.
Good luck!
