Celexa: Report on sex drive

Posted by Cass on January 31, 2000, at 18:55:58

I feel that my depression is being mildly alleviated by Celexa, but, wow, my sex drive hasn't been this strong in quite awhile. It's frustrating since I am not seeing anyone, but it does make me feel ALIVE.

Cass - Yup, your sex drive can be the pits on Celexa. The mechanism of this is not really known, but may have something to do with the sub-receptors of serotonin being stimulated. This is true of all SSRIs. In men the most common effect is that it is harder to reach ejaculation (actually SSRIs have been used for premature ejaculation). In women the effect is anorgasmia or the inability to reach orgasm very easily. Talk to your doctor, there a couple ways to combat this. I have never seen a woman treated for this, but in men I have found 100mg of Wellbutrin SR in the morning seems to help. Sorry I can't be of more help. Anyone else out there have this successfully treated? - Good luck - Cam W.

Cam, I was actually saying that my sex drive has been strong. I'm suprised since most ADs diminish the sex drive.

Cass, glad to hear somebody happy on an SSRI! I tried Prozac, Luvox, and Zoloft, with sexual side effects (no o). So I never tried Celexa, having read horror stories. Then found that Effexor-XR and Serzone don't cause this, although Effexor changed the quality of the o (much more satisfying, so quality is now more important than quantity).--Cindy W

Sorry Cass - Reading too fast and missed the "this" in your sentence. Your case is an example that not all side effects happen to everyone. Consider yourself (very) lucky and enjoy! - Cam W.
