Neurotin for anxiety?

Posted by Anxiety mom on January 7, 2000, at 0:53:13

Social anxiety & neurotin? Doctor has recommended
adding neurotin to wellbutrin to adolescent who has not
responded well to SSRIs for mixed anxiety & depression.
The wellbutrin has addressed the depression but
BUSPAR did not work for anxiety so he has suggested
neurotin. Isn't this like hitting a fly with a baseball
bat? I thought neurotin was an antiseizure drug that
had also been found effective for bipolar -- not GAD
or social anxiety. Anyone with experience with this?

Somewhere in the past month or two there was a thread here about a study of neurontin for social anxiety. I believe one person posted that she is taking as much as 3600 mg/day for anxiety. You might want to try searching babble archives. Or, look up in Dr. Bob's Psychopharmocology tips, and do a search, or do a search on something like pubmed, which will show you abstracts of some of the published research. I think one of the things that is appealing about neurontin for anxiety is that for people who have labile moods, some of the usual antianxiety drugs fuel the up and down tendencies, whereas the mood stabilizing drugs even things out some. But you'll get better feedback from someone who actually takes neurontin. Good luck.

Neurontin may be a good choice, particularly with it's low side effect profile. It mixes with about anything out there. I took it for a form of neuralgia (minimal success) but did not need it when I switched over to Parnate with Lithium (which I'd been taking for some time). Neurontin in used widely as a mood stabilizer with a lot of success, as far as anxiety, it may work, certainly worth the try. Blessings,

No, I just looked this up. One psychiatrist on Dr.
Bob's tips has used it in anxious adolescents.

PubMed has some interesting citations, though few
juicy abstracts. Epileptic patients have
reported improved mood. People withdrawing from
alcohol have found that it improved mood and
was anxiolitic. There's even an article with
the title "Gabapentin: a Potential Anti-anxiety
Medication"

It's hardly a standard treatment, but it's not
batting in the dark.

Ithas done wonders for my anxiety (GAD), things Celexa could not do on its own. BuSpar didn't work for me either. The side effects (sleepiness, dizziness) wore off in about a week. I take 1600mg/day.

Good Luck!!
