Nardil and MAOI dosages

Posted by Mark on December 9, 1999, at 17:54:58

Can Nardil, or any other MAOI, be taken all at once (entire daily dosage at once). Why is it necessary to split up the dose? Do MAOIs have short half-lives like the benzos, or is it due to blood pressure reasons?

MAOIs due work better when taken in divided doses. They do tend to have short half-lives. I take nardil in the morning so as to interfer with sleep as little as possible.

The irreversible MAOIs have really short elimination half-lives, but that's not the reason (the half-life of an irreversible MAOI won't affect the % MAO inhibition). Splitting the dose may minimize side effects by spreading them out.

Many doctors will recommend you try to take it all in the morning or early afternoon to avoid insomnia, but my experience has been that it doesn't make a difference what time of day you take them (with the exception of Parnate, which is kind of stimulating) - the insomnia happens regardless!

Maybe I phrased my question wrong? Is it harmful or less beneficial to take the entire daily dose at once? Also, how long after taking Nardil will my SP begin to improve? I have heard that Parnate works a lot faster, but do the MAOIs in general kick in quickly?

You might get more side effects that way. Unless you're getting pretty dangerous side effects (e.g. severe orthostatic hypotension), this probably won't be a big deal.

It varies - give it at least a month.

They can, but they won't for everybody.
