oh god. here I am at 4:00 AM and I am...awake? woke up at 3:30 for no apparent reason and could not fall back asleep. I had this difficulty on paxil, I dont think I achieved REM sleep the whole time i was on paxil...maybe this is an exaggeration...but thats how it felt. I was up 3 or 4 times a night.
has anyone had this experience with celexa? I can add some trazadone but really, I dont want to. I am also taking ativan daily for anxiety...this is minorly sedating, and have had no troulbe sleeping until now...its been abot 12 days on celexa.....send the sandman my way...please!

> jennyannHi Jennyanne. Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, and now Prozac were all the same with me...BAD sleep. I think that's common with SSRIs, though not with everyone. I know how you feel about not wanting to add Trazodone, but it might be the only option to get the sandman to cooperate.
I take Remeron 7.5mg, very similar to low dose Traz. Other considerations would be switching to a TCA, or adding a small amount of a TCA at dinner. I think that might work better for your sleep and your depression than Traz would. I could be wrong, but I don't think your sleep will improve without a sedating adjunct. I hope I'm wrong. But often the sandman needs a little coaxing...especially with SSRIs. That's my experience anyway.

Effexor and other seratonin meds (I was on Prozac and Paxil at times) did this to me, too. I took trazodone, in a very small dose, to sleep and that worked for a while. It was very sedating, which I hate, the feeling of, but it worked. Then, with increasing depression, my pdoc decided to have me try serzone instead of the trazodone, for both the sleep and antidepressant augmentation effects. It worked ok for a while, until my effexor dose got up to 375 mg xr. Now, as you might read in other threads, I tend to wake up in the middle of the night all "squiggly", which was a word coined by someone else on this board. Have little tics and fidgety, etc. Last night I actually slept from about 12 midnight to 6:30 am. Wow. But I was drowsy at about 7:30 and went back to sleep until 11:30, which I know is a sleep hygiene no-no, but it is the weekend and that bed was calling me back.

yeah, I remember the SQUIGGLY stuff too...like I wanted to go and run a marathon, also effected my arms, like I needed to lift weights in the middle of the night, like an adults version of growing pains. Ive had none of that yet wth celexa, but I do hate not sleeping...anyway, Ill see what the trazedone does, and Im also wondering, can I take the trazedone intermittantly? I mean, some nights I am exahusted and I know Ill sleep, someother nights, times of high anxiety, I think I might wake up....whatcha think?

I have the opposite effect with Celexa. All I want to do is sleep. I am so tired I can barely move some days. From my past experience with Trazadone years ago, it is great for sleep. I had to take it sitting on the edge of my bed at night...it was that effective!

I have been taking trazodone only as needed. Didn't like the hangover - now trying remeron instead. I was described 15 mg, the first night (and day) I slept 26 hrs! Maybe I should try half of that.

I think if you are taking a small dose of trazodone you cant use it intermittently. But ask your doc.
