Query for Dr. B

Posted by Danny on October 6, 1999, at 0:06:11

My new ex-psychiatrist tells me it is illegal to prescribe benzodiazepines for long term use. My old psychiatrist never mentioned this while prescribing ativan for the last eight years. I understand the addictive nature of these drugs, but what is does the law actually say? thanks, and thanks for your work here.

Danny, I'm not the doc, but what your ex-pdoc said is complete b.s. I've been taking Xanax (approximately 2 mg. per day these days ... just got a scrip today) -- another benzo -- for 4 years with no problems. And, for your information, you're not addicted unless you're continually increasing your dose to get a "fix". If taken on a regular basis for the proper reason and in the proper dose, you are dependent on Ativan, but as humans we're all dependent on many things, such as food and air. If it helps you have a functional life, don't sweat it.

Louise
