Effexor causing hyperactivity

Posted by Stressed Mom on September 26, 1999, at 23:26:31

My son just started taking effexor and adderall. He is very agitated and can't stop moving. I would like to hear from anyone who could tell me if they have had similar effects from the effexor.

How much effexor & how much addrall is he taking. Effexor has stimulating effects on most folks. I don't know about adderall -- not even sure what it is for... What is he taking these for, how old is he?

My guess is that this statement is the most important. When I started taking Effexor, I was awake for three days straight and couldn't stop fidgeting, wiggling my feet, tapping my foot, etc. That wore off, but every time the dose was raised, it came back to a lesser degree for about a week or ten days. Now that my dose has been stable for a while, it's not an issue anymore, though I am a little high energy naturally. (Lots of nervous energy, all the time. Too much stimulation is a problem for me, but this is normal Racer behavior, not drug induced.)

Good luck to you, this has got to be difficult for you, but if the treatment works, much better to get help young. Research seems to say that the longer these disorders are allowed to go on, the more permanent damage can be done to the brain, making it more likely to have another episode, and more difficult to treat subsequent episodes. In my case, I had a major depressive period that lasted almost ten years beginning in my early teens. Gee, you think that has anything to do with my current troubles? Good for you to help your son now, especially for moving through your fears to get him the help he needs. If we all had mothers like you, just think of how wonderful the world could be.

My daughter seems to get hyped and agitated from ssri's. She has been on ritalin and adderall and she is never agitated on these. She was taking paxil for 3 weeks and was so nervous and agitated, with no impulse control, that the doc took her off it. He did mention the fact that it is usually a transient side-effect, after the first 3-4 weeks it is gone. She now takes BuSpar and has no agitation and seems much more relaxed. But all the ssri's she tried seemed to agravate her. Good Luck with your son.
