Dr. Bob, Your Copyright Policy????

Posted by Elle on September 25, 1999, at 0:29:58

Dr Bob , was looking through your FAQ's. What is the legal basis for your claim that sending a mesage to you transfers it's copyright to you ?

What if it's already copyrighted somewhere else?

What if the sender intends to copyright it sometime in the future?

Just asking

Check the top of the Psycho-Babble page for the disclaimer. By participating, you agree to relenquish copyright. Fairly standard practice for any venue that takes voluntary contributions.

Hmm...

The idea wasn't that posting a message inherently transferred the copyright, but that agreeing to transfer the copyright was a condition of participating.

But really I just want to be able to use these posts elsewhere. For example, on my Read! page (the Books link at the top of the Psycho-Babble home page) or in an article or something (if I ever get organized). I don't need to become the legal "owner" of the post.

I've revised the FAQ again. :-)

Nobody should post anything they don't have the right to. When exactly one has that right can be complicated, though...

My understanding is that when you write something you (usually) get the copyright to it. It doesn't even have to include a copyright statement. There's a process by which you can *register* that copyright, but that's a somewhat separate issue.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Bob
