Dr. Bob or Toby -- Surgical anesthesia and AD's...

Posted by janey girl on September 22, 1999, at 19:43:07

Dr. Bob and Toby,

I hope you have the time to answer this. I am having
a hysterectomy in November. I currently take Wellbutrin
SR 150 mg daily, and trazadone 300 mg at night.

When I last had surgery, I was taking Effexor XR 300
mg daily and trazadone 300 mg at night. After the
surgery, in recover and in my room, the pain medicine
didn't work for me at all, and they had given me a
horse's dose, plus I kinda wigged out at the hospital
staff, and called a cab to come pick me up apparently..
I have no memory of this episode, but I was pretty bad
from what the surgeon told me.

I notice on my Wellbutrin information sheet, that I need
to take care when taking pain medicine. Well, I am
taking pain medicine, and I'm concerned about another
post-op reaction with regard to anesthesia, pain shots
and my anti-depressants.... Can you guys offer me any
guidance? Thank you so much.

janey

Other sources of info?

I know Dr. Bob and Toby don't always have time to
answer questions or visit the room regularly.

Does anyone have any idea where I can get information
on AD's and surgical anesthesia reactions/interactions?

thank you.

I checked out the site for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (http://www.asahq.org/). They have a patient education section that is probably worth your while to read, but they don't have any sort of email help line or anything like that.

They did have some good advice, tho. Talk to your anesthesiologist. If one hasn't been scheduled for your surgery yet, then ask to at least talk to someone from the department on the hospital's staff. Tell that doctor your concerns, and tell him/her about your previous experience. According to that site above, it's the anesthesiologist's responsibility to be your advocate in the operating room, which certainly makes sense if he's the one who is going to put you under.

Go to that site, read the information they have about what you should expect when you have surgery with anesthesia, and then be pro-active about it. Don't wait for your doctors to ask the day before your operation -- if you need reassurance right now, have them do their job of keeping you informed right now.

Best of luck,
Bob
