new to nardil: What CAN I eat? What will KILL me?

Posted by chris on July 20, 1999, at 13:58:46

HI,
I have been a social phobic for years and now I am
on nardil for the first time. I haven't started taking
it yet (just got it today). Does anyone know of any
good sites about what not to eat? Does anyone have any
suggestions on what I can eat?
As far as I can tell...I can eat bread and water! :P
Ok maybe I am exagerating. :) Anyway, any tips will
be greatly appreciated. Bye

The list of things you can't eat is actually pretty short, and getting shorter every year. :-> I take Parnate, and I can post the restricted foods list that *I* use (and references supporting this list) if you'd like.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Phenelzine, Chris, I have
great confidence that it will help you. Remember that if you
have some uncomfortable, quirky side-effects, many will dissipate
over time.

I've been taking MAOis for the better part of 15 years,
and here's my experience with the diet restrictions: no big deal.
I don't mean to suggest becoming cavalier--the dangers are real--
only that the restrictions hampered my life not one whit. Here they
are for me:

1) no aged cheese (I can eat pizza with no problem, but try it out
carefully--small amounts--and if you get headache, thats's a red flag)
Make sure you know which cheeses are aged. E.g., cottage cheese no,
parmesan yes.
2) no chianti (I didn't drink any red wine for 15 years, but I recently
read it's ok, except for chianti)
3) and that's it! I've had no problems with anything else.

Still more important: Avoid all cough medicine except the one that
doesn't work (I forget what it is, your pharmacist will tell you) and
most over the counter cold medicines (tylenol p.m., contact, all the
good stuff is out. Always read the back of the medicine bottle when
dealing with colds, coughs, and probably other stuff too).
Finally, tell your dentist about the MAOI because you can't use
novocane (sp), or any anesthetic that has vaso-constrictors in it. so
yes, surgery's a problem! Now some of these restrictions may have changed
over time, but double-check.

Actually Chianti is okay too. (According to research, not just according to "I tried it and it was okay." Although I *have* had Chianti a number of times while on MAOIs, as well, and I'm pretty sensitive to tyramine.)

Actually, the ingredient to watch out for is dextromethorphan. Codeine is okay (and does work).

Again, I think it's better just to remember which specific drugs are bad rather than trying to remember all the brand names. Pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are two common ingredients in OTC cold medicine that are problematic. (Antihistamines, such as chlorpheniramine (e.g., ChlorTrimeton) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl)) are okay, although the MAOI may or may not worsen some of their side effects.

Yeah, usually it will have a warning on it about MAOIs.

Again, this probably isn't really a problem, but most dentists will want to play it safe.

>so
> yes, surgery's a problem!

Surgery (even with general anaesthesia) can be done, actually, and depending on how urgent the surgery is and how bad it would be to go off the antidepressant, it may be better to just stay on the MAOI.
