second messenger systems

Posted by Michael Boyer on July 21, 1999, at 5:13:02

Dear, Sir

It is my understanding that the first messenger in second messenger
systems activate G(stimulatory) or G(inhibitory) proteins which amplify the
signal of the first messenger in the case of G(stimulatory) proteins. My
question that I am trying to resolve is whether cAMP which is activated by
G(stimulatory) provokes the opening of a second ion channel separate from
the ion channel opened by the first messenger, or if this is one and the
same channel. It seems that amplification could result from a lessening of
resistance between the + and - ion fields, perhaps caused by the G(stimulatory)protein.
This I do not know and leads me to speculate that we have two distinct
action potentials in this type system, but this is not my field at all and I
need some pointers in the right direction.

Sincerely,

Michael Boyer
