Hi,
I remember reading somewhere that dopamine reuptake inhibition
occurs with Effexor only at high doses. But I can't remember at
what dose (225mg? 325mg?) and I can't find the reference anymore. If you know, please reply, it's very important.
thanks,
anita

It has weak dopamine reuptake inhibition ( compaired to 5HT and nor-e) but I notice a difference (for me and me only !) at 100 mgs that is different than any AD, and I associate this with Dopamine. It is a non mood cognation improving effect that really helps with the ADD. I've looked for the same info and have not found it but assume it takes a higher dose to get sig. effect. I take 200-300.
What is your intrest in Dopamine ?
Beware....St James can take large doses of all meds with little side effect. You need to talk with your doc b4 upping any dose, but esp. Effexor
because many have nasty side effects with greater doses. Too much of a good thing is not always good !j

Thanks for the input. I could swear someone on Psycho-Babble mentioned a specific
dose once, but alas I cannot find it.I wish Dr. Bob had a search feature for the
Psycho-Babble posts, but that's another topic...I'm interested in dopamine because the only meds that have had a good effect for
me have had some dopaminergic action (Nardil, Parnate, ritalin, prozac), and for various
reasons I cannot take them. So, for me, I'm pretty convinced dopamine = less depression.
I'm currently taking 225mg Effexor, but I despair of going much higher due to side effects,
and I'm tempted to just give up on it and try Marplan, tho I fear weight gain and excessive
sweating.Well, you asked :-)

Amantadine will boost levels of dopamine.

I've been thinking the same thing about dopamine. Med that has helped me the most is Nardil. I didn't know Prozac had a dopaminergic effect -- thought it was only serotonin. I'm wondering why you didn't mention Wellbutrin since it's the main dopamine raising drug.

> Well, Wellbutrin made me irritable the first two times I tried it, but I'm
taking 100mg now and it hasn't made me irritable yet, but it hasn't done much else
except keep me awake a little more. We'll see. It's kinda unclear whether or not, or how,
Wellbutrin affects dopamine. Amantadine blocks the reuptake in D1 and D2 receptors, as
does pergolide, but bromocriptine blocks the reuptake in D2 only. D2 receptors have been
more implicated in depression than D1.anita

Hi all. I just started taking Effexor XR 37.5 a day. After a week I will raise the dose to 75. I've tried prozac, paxil, and serzone all with only moderate success. This has lead me to believe that my depression may respond better to an AD that has noradrenargic effects. Now for my question, at what dose does Effexor begin to inhibit the reutpake of NE, is 75 enough or do I need to go higher? And has anyone here tried the new narcolepsy drug Modafinil (PROVIGIL) for depression? I'm starting to get desperate for relief and I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the help in advance.
This is the end of the thread.
