Is it a dopamine thing?

Posted by Leonora on June 17, 1999, at 17:21:16

Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil have all failed to give me relief from my depression. Prozac worked well for me at one time, but revisiting it this time seems to do little. My doctor thinks that serontonin must not be the problem and wants me to try serzone or wellbutrin. How exactly are they different and has anyone experienced success with these drugs but not other ssri's?

Wellbutrin blocks the reuptake of dopamine, but not serotonin, so it works on a different neurotransmitter. Whether or not it will work is something you have to find out by trial and error. I was on Prozac for a couple of months, got no relief of my depression, and had numerous side-effects. I tried Wellbutrin with modest improvement of my symptoms. After a couple of months, I added lithium to the mix, and this resulted in much greater efficacy.
Good Luck,
Jim
