Anafranil good for sex?

Posted by JohnL on June 25, 1999, at 21:35:47

I asked this in a series of questions in my previous post. In hopes of getting as many responses as possible, I hope it's OK to present this question once again on a stand-alone basis. I remember a doctor once (not in my area anymore) discussing the various effects of antidepressants on one's sex life. He said Anafranil was great for sex. As I think back on it, I can't decide whether he was being sarcastic, joking, or serious. So, does anyone know? I would think all TCAs would be harmful to one's sex life in one way or another, but maybe not. It sure would be a lot easier to take on the side effects of a TCA if it didn't hurt your sex life, or even actually made it better. Can anyone comment on Anafranil? I'm not sure, but I think it is also called Tofranil and Clomipramine. Thanks again. JohnL.

Ouch. I should have surfed before asking about Anafranil. Several websites list it as being notorious for causing sexual dysfunction, 20% impotence in men, 85% who experienced sexual dysfunction had it so bad they quit the drug! Ouch. I think maybe that doc was being sarcastic, yeah?

John,

Not sure how helpful this will be, but I took Imiprimine (a TCA) for over a year and my sex life was never better (libido and physical response both).

As I'm sure you know, everytime we try another med, the side effects are a big question mark; and nobody's reaction ever seems to be the same.

It can't hurt to try Anafranil (or any of the other TCA's). They're a piece of cake to wean off if they turn out to be the wrong med for you.

Good luck.

Judy

Anafranil is the worst! It compeletly kills sex (I've heard similar accounts from women as well)

JohnL,
I'm afraid I'd have to agree with Steve on this one. Your Doctor was probably being sarcastic, unless he thought that delayed orgasm (VERY delayed) was a desirable side effect.

It's also notorious for weight-gain.

That being said, it's extremely effective for OCD.

Your Doctor must have a dry sense of humor.
