I decided to give Dexedrine a try because I've been having problems focusing and have quite a bit of work to do that requires me to focus. (I don't have ADD, as far as I know; this is a recent thing and hopefully will be short-lived.) I'm starting out at 5mg. It's immediate-release tablets, not the "spansules."
Does anyone have any comments on Dexedrine vs. other stimulants? I'm a little bit nervous because Ritalin made me "freak out."

Elizabeth, how did you get a doctor to prescribe that for you? Every doctor I know won't even discuss that drug (which is unfortunate).

I, too, am interested in why a doc would prescribe
short-acting dex for someone who is not ADD? Even
though I am a tested and approved ADDer, the very
first thing my doc said while writing the rx was
"these are for the spansules - you'll get into
less trouble with these." Not knowing anything
about this drug, I asked and he said that the
quick-release stuff tends to rocket tolerance in
many individuals. Since I've been on 40mg/day for
years, I guess he knows something.
Good Luck! BTW - Are you taking anything else?

Hi folks.
My doctor is generally pretty open-minded about trying some odd things. I have refractory depression, only recently brought to a screeching halt with the combination of Parnate and lithium. I've tried some pretty strange stuff.
He also seems to have a good understanding of addiction: in order to get someone addicted to medication, you generally need the combination of an impulsive thrill-seeking personality type (*not* me at all!) with an addictive drug. Even a very addictive drug used responsibly will not create a drug addict out of a non-addict. (Note: it is *very* rare for people using prescribed drugs for a true medical problem (e.g., chronic pain, ADD, panic disorder) to get addicted.)
I prefer slow-release drugs because, well, they last longer! I'm going to ask my doctor why he prescribed the tablets instead, since according to my [outdated - 1997] PDR the spansules come in 5mg. But anyway, I'm not going to be taking it for long, nor every day. So if the quick-release stuff does cause tolerance (not something I'd ever heard of), it shouldn't be an issue.
This is the end of the thread.
