Depression better but now I'm fat again. HELP

Posted by Donut on June 21, 1999, at 18:33:05

I had to stop prozac because of tremors. After 6 months of trying other meds, I now take Celexa 40mg and Buspar BID and Remeron for sleep. It is working
but I have gained 20 pounds and I am already overweight and have knee problems. The remeron
really helped my sleep and I hate to stop it. Does anyone have any suggestions??? I was thinking of trying phentermine for the weight loss, but I already feel like a pill factory. I am desperate because this weight feels awful, and I am not sure which is worse--the depression or being fat again!!!

Three helpful things I've done to aid in weight control are 1) increase fiber in my diet gradually until consuming 45 grams per day (very high fiber cereals and psyllium (sugar free - I tolerate Citrucel the best; 2) drinking *lots* of water; 3) making sure my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone hovers around 2 (low normal); this is something to bring up with your doc. I am hypothyroid and my level tends to fluctuate readily with various medication changes. There are no easy answers. Last year I lost thirty pounds over six months and then gained it all back in two due to changes in mood and meds. It is hard to keep a decent wardrobe changing clothing sizes all of the time. Dealing with the health concerns is something your doc needs to help you work with. There is no easy answer, but I've found combining a myriad of approaches to be most useful. Zantac helped the gnawing in my stomach while taking Depakote (the feeling that another cracker will settle your stomach). Meds that alter carbohydrate metabolism or otherwise interfere with it are hard to deal with. Everyone notices when I am losing weight and tending towards wasting away. No one says a word when I start becoming a bit chunky again. Interesting. I wish you well and hope you find some solutions.
