Anxiety and Obsession

Posted by aloka on June 16, 1999, at 23:49:31

I have suffered from obsession and chronic anxiety for the last 10 years. I took Cannabis Indica for 4 years, when I was 17-21 years old. When I left cannabis, I developed a feeling that an inharmonious current sweeping through my body, which I could not voluntarily stop. Whenever I thought of doing something good, a diabolic image of my "friend" (who introduced me to Cannabis) would appear and stop me from doing anything.

My doctor initially prescribed me Serepax (oxazepam). This did not cure me. My next doctor prescribed me Salpiride, Perfenacine, Amitryptiline and Diazepam. Gradually, my dosage increased. Now I am taking 300 mg Salpiride, 16 mg Perfenacine, 30 mg Amitryptiline and 1 mg Diazepam a day, and I am feeling progressively weak.

Has anybody had these symptoms before? Can anyone suggest any alternate more potent medicines, with which I can then consult my doctor?

From what you say of your symptoms and the medications you have tried, it would seem to me that the best thing to try might be one of the well-known serotonin reuptake inhibitors: fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), sertraline (Zoloft), or paroxetine (Paxil).

These have a very good track record in obsessive/depressive states, whereas the various"drug cocktails" you have tried so far do not seem to have been very serotonin-oriented. If your anxiety is severe, and especially if you have insomnia, I would perhaps suggest trying paroxetine first since it's the most calming, but the others are probably just as effective (or even more effective) in the long run.

Good luck to you.

Best,
JD
