Has anyone heard about the effects of anxiety on cholesterol levels? I have heard that when you are very anxious then it can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream (my psychologist told me) I have recently had mine checked and it was very high (7.1 mmol) I found this to be quite distressing as my diet is not what I would call a major contributing factor.
My Dr. told me that many young women (I'm 25) who are on the contraceptive pill have high levels.
Could any one shed any light on anxiety and cholesterol levels ?

> Alison>Hi Alison,
I've never heard of a connection between high cholesterol and anxiety but I find the possibility intriquing. I'm also being treated for anxiety and take birth control pills and have very high cholesterol. However, I also have many family members who also have stubbornly high cholesterol (doesn't respond to cholesterol-lowering drugs). Also, my cholesterol level has increased since I've been treated for anxiety rather than decreased.

Melinda,
Thank you for your response. I wonder if there is somewhere that we can find a proven answer to this strange phenomenon. I am also a Nursing student (in Australia) and I will quiz my Anatomy and Physiology Lecturer. He might have an idea of where we can read about it. I don't know about any family history as they have'nt been checked, would be interesting to find out ! If you hear anything please let me know.
Alison.
P.S. Dr.Bob, could you help us out on this one ???

Hi,
Some antidepressants, like Prozac and Effexor, can raise cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Birth control pills can, too.anita
