Parnate withdrawal if skip doses???

Posted by anita on January 23, 1999, at 21:41:50

Parnate is working relatively well for me now, but I
noticed that if I forget to take my full dosage each
day (I usually spread 40mg out to 4 pills btw 10am
& 7pm), I can get down and weepy and tired and nauseous.
Could I possibly be having some form of withdrawal so
quickly?

The only thing I can think of is that you had not been on it long enough to get the full medication into your system. (I have been on a dosage as high as 6 pills a day.)

It's a very short-acting drug (half-life is 2 hours or so). While the antidepressant effect seems to be a long-term one, there is also a direct stimulant effect.

Anyway, there is a withdrawal syndrome which can be quite severe; it may not happen if you only miss one dose, but then again it may. If you're quitting, you should taper off slowly, of course.

In doing a lot of reading and browsing through stories of people's experiences with the myriad antidepressants available, and one of the few common threads seems to be that Parnate is, with few exceptions, a tremendous success story. I would be very interested to know what your experiences in terms of side effects have been. My psychiatrist told me not to try it because it has so many side effects -- i.e.:all your hair falls out, involuntary ejaculation(?), etc. If it's such a horror drug, why do so many people seem so thrilled with it?
