I've been struggling with severe depression for over six years. I've tried prozac, paxil, celexa, effexor, xanax, zyprexa, and risperdal all to no avail. The risperdal worked a little bit but the side effects are not bearable. Meanwhile I went through four doctors. Presently i'm stuck going to a community health center doctor because i have no income. He is unwilling to increase the dosage of my meds, or change them, or anything. He castigates me for not being motivated even though lack of motivation is a typical symptom of depression. Does anyone have any advice on how to find a doctor who is well versed in psychopharmachology and who does not blame his/her patients for their misery? I'm looking for a good doctor in the tri-state area.

Mila,
I've been there too. 2 things which might help Wellbutrin or Desryel. I'm taking a combination, and wellbutrin is kind of expensive without insurance. Desryel can be sedating, so I take it at night. I'm not sure where you are, but look in you phone book for mental health centers attached to hospitals, or clinics affiliated with universities. Some of these will offer care to people without insurance. When you get a choice of doctors, ask them what their approach to meds is. There was a thread in Jan or Feb which dealt with finding the right doctor...
Stay with it--there are solutions, but it does take a lot of faith that things can and will get better.

> CarolThanks - I have tried wellbutrin, unfortunately it did not help. I am so desparate for some sort of relief. what kind of drug is desryel? I have so much trouble getting my doctor to prescribe anything -he keeps telling me to go out and meet people and to get a job -but I cannot do any of these things. I'll look into other clinics and hopefully find some free care elsewhere.
Thanks

James here....Sounds like part of the problem is with the doc !
Are you seeing a GP or a Pdoc ? Try to find a clinic that does sliding scale where you can see a Pdoc and not a GP. I have had sucess getting friends placed in free clinics by asking my Pdoc who does sliding scale work...if you have a friend who see's a Pdoc see if they can inquire for you.j
