Ah, Brian Wilson

He certainly suffered, and came out of it too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_KY_d9MQv8

The video is a lot of cheesy crap.
I imagine him trying to play the piano in the sandpit they built for him.

When did this come out? It felt sad, even then.

Like Roy Orbison?

>It was originally a traditional West Indies folk song

You know what that means?

It must be interesting to live so near to there.

History there, no?

There's some nice playing on this one, with the most tasteful guitar solo I'm aware of.

Great Songs guys. I do see an age difference with some songs. Which Beach Boy is no longer with us is it Brian? And didn't Brenda Lee get raped in motel in Long Island seem to remember that. Christine Agular sang that song better than original. Love Phillipa

Philli[a,
You wrote,[...my hair..hair spray..my first baby..]
I am unsure as to if you are wanting to mean if there is or is not a connection with the hair spray and your first baby. Could you expound on that?

I may have been 15 at boarding school when I had a dream about Grace Slick.
This song is an exercise in imperiousness....wonderful, with Nicky Hopkins on piano and Jorma Kaukonan on guitar.

Someone put this up on Youtube recently. It's not the best version, but still.

You will love the words, and perhaps know someone to whom they might apply.
(David McComb, the writer of them, had a heart transplant and then committed suicide later.)

Tender is the Night.

I knew him as a gentle young man
I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes
And years before his time

Surrounded himself with shiny things
First night tickets, ermine, pearls upon a string
And disappeared in all the pestilence
that sudden pleasure brings

He never asks after her anymore
He made a point of losing her address
And every trinket that she ever touched
he keeps locked away
And just burns up In the furnace of his chest

Well I spoke to a man who says he's done it all
and the only thing that pleases or excites him now
is hurting, hurting then hurting some more
There's someone I want to forget tonight
Don't you want to forget someone too?
I left him, and I can leave you too

Baby let's go out tonight
It will all turn out all right I'm sure
Don't want to drink at home again tonight
So let's go out
Let's go out tonight
It's getting dark earlier now
But where you are it's just getting light
Where you are it will just be getting light

Lou, Tammy was so delightfully retro.

Have you heard this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2p8Yj0xj8I

Half Past France, by John Cale

I suppose I'm glad I'm on this train
And it's long
Somewhere between Dunkirk an Paris
Most people here are still asleep
But I'm awake
Looking out from here -- at half-past France

Things are much different here than Norway
Not so cold
Wonder when we'll be in Dundee
Old Hollweg knows his way around
He's no fool
Wish I'd get to see my son again

From here on it's got to be
A simple case of them or me
If they're alive then I am dead
Pray God and eat your daily bread
Take your time

We're so far away
Floating in this bay
We're so far away from home
Where we belong

I'm not afraid now of the dark anymore
And many mountains now are molehills
Back in Berlin they're all well fed
I don't care
People always bored me anyway.

From here on it's got to be
A simple case of them or me
If they're alive then I am dead
Pray God and eat your daily bread
Take your time

We're so far away
Floating in this bay
We're so far away from home
Where we belong.
