What is the average dose for Paxil? I'm on 1/2 of 12.5mg a day and am wondering if this is too low to do much?

most ppl on this thread arent on paxil so you may not get many answers here...but that's a very low dose. 20 is the most common.

Hey Katia..I was on 10 to start and then went to 20 then to 30 and stayed on 30 for hmmm 4 years..it was great for me but gained a lot of weight and after I went off of it I realized that I was pretty numb those years...but I might not have stayed on it so long maybe that wouldve been better but at the time it was a lifesaver and that is what I hope happens with the Lexapro...Good luck and take good care of yourself...Mystic

I was just wondering because my pdoc had me start at 1/2 of 12.5. He even said that some people even benefit from 1/4 of 12.5. My system is sensitive so I think I'm staying at 12.5mg. I just went up to that yesterday. I'm also on 450mg of Trileptal and 15mg of Seroquel for sleep. (BPII)
Part of me wonders if it's helping at that low level or if it's just my BELIEF that it's helping that makes it help.

I started Lexapro on 4-12-04 was on 10 mg for the first 2 weeks then went to 10 twice a day and I just started wellbutrin 150 a week ago and am now taking 300 in the morning. I've lost 33lbs and 2 1/2 inches since I started treatment for Major Depressive Disorder. I've also started an exercise program which includes 30 min of aerobic 3 time a week and power walking a mile every day and weight lifting two days a week. So I cant say that the Lexapro alone has caused the weight loss. But it has made me feel like living and that is the important part. The only side effects that are remotely bothersome are the increased sweating and the delayed ejaculation. And I'm not really complaining about the later... However the wife is now concerned that she is inadequate and I have to reassure her that it is the medication. What used to take 10 to 15 min now takes an hour or more..

I found that when I was on the Paxil my appetite had increased...I was curious if anyone noticed any significant weight loss or gain while taking the Lexapro???? I'm trying to lose about 20lbs and I don't want anything to hinder that??? Any comments would be really appreciated!!! Thanks a bunch!!! mzanna

> I have been on Lex almost 5 months. I lost 10lbs. during the first month and I have not gained it back. I did not TRY to lose, I just found my appetite was less and I ate less. I'm still about 5lbs. overweight and would like to lose them but I have not been trying to.

If you read the package insert for Lexapro, you can see that in the clincal trials, increasing the dose from 10 mg to 20 mg made no difference in symptoms of depression, but did cause all side effects to double! My question to your doc would be, what is the basis for increasing the dose when the trials proved it would do no good for depression symptoms?

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. Everyone is very different in their needs for meds and in their reactions to them. I have recently increased to 20mgs and have never felt better. I did not experience any differences in side effects, in fact I hardly noticed the increase except for my better mood and abilities to cope. My advice to anyone is to listen to their doctors. If the increase is not for you, you will know pretty quick. Mrs. C

i agree totally mrs c. side effects come to everyone differently. there's no evidence that twice as much medicine = twice as much side effects. i went from 10 to 20 and felt very spacy. im on 15 now and feel good. everyone is different. trust your body.

I, too, went off Lexapro cold turkey after 5 months. The nurse thought cold turkey would be OK because it takes a long time for the Lexapro to build up in one's system. I wanted to go off it because I started feeling groggy and like I couldn't wake up. After I quit it the grogginess did go away. Lexapro made me feel very competent. I got shingles a little over a month after I quit taking it and in the first few days of the shingles experience, I hyperventilated for the first time in my life. Any relationship(s) between all of this?

I haven't noticed any gain. I have noticed a loss but I am on Topamax as well so I attribute the loss to that more so than the Lexapro.

> emilyI didn't mean to sound beligerent; but as a former nurse practitioner (now stay at home mom) I have seen the "spin" that the drug reps can put on the medicines and how the providers can buy into unproven information. As for evidence, in the package insert for Lexapro it clearly states that in their clinical trials there was no greater efficacy of the 20 mg dose over the 10 mg, but the side effects all doubled when the patients in the trials increased the dose from 10 to 20. I was only wondering why a doc would then increase the dose if there was no proof of greater results, only greater side effects? I'm glad to hear that you have done well with this increase and I agree that everyone responds differently to medicines. For me, Effexor has been a life saver when the SSRIs didn't work!

Hey Ya'll
After college I lost about 25 lbs. I kept the weight off for over a year. When I first got on Lex, I lost a good amount of weight. Now when I increased my dose to 20 I saw about a 5 lb weight gain and now am up to 8. Some of this is my fault because I have been vacationing and not working out. I feel like I am hungry more often and also can eat more...I just joined my new gym and am going to start working at it so I will let you know how it goes. Weight gain is AWFUL. yuck
all the luck

I have been on 10 mg Lexapro since October for anxiety and depression. this month around my period I became terrified, paranoid and depressed. It has passed. My pdoc suggested taking 15 mg's lex a few days before and during, then going back to my 10. Has anyone tried this???
thanks!

Have been on Lex 15 mos. DX = PMDD and depression. Currently @ 30mg. Started period yesterday and have been *grouchy* about 5 days already. Today I'm feeling like I want to!!!!!!!AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!! Seems like Lex quits working for me too this time of month.
As for all the comments on increasing.... started @ 5mg and have increased always on pdoc's advice. Doubled dose only gave me relief, had no bad side effects after initial bout.
Best of luck to all!~~~8|8

Has anyone noticed a connection between Lexapro and either blood sugar or blood pressure? I am not diabetic but noticed my glucose levels fluctuating significantly while on the drug. I gradually got off the Lexapro, stopping a few days ago. My bp has been unusually low as well the last week or so. It's likely that all this is due to other causes; I'm just trying to rule out the med as a cause.
